For a number of years, the national press has been singling out Madison (and the rest of Dane County) for one reason or another -- "Top 10 Canoe Towns" and "Top 20 Counties for Economic Strength" to name two distinctions on seemingly opposite sides of the fence. But it wasn't until July 1996 that Madison got the nod many residents felt it so richly deserved, when Money magazine dubbed it the best place to live in the United States. The city has often been singled out by Money because, as one reporter noted, "someone forgot to tell the folks in Madison that life is supposed to be full of trade-offs."
